The Rancho Cucamonga Fire District has purchased an electric fire engine for $1.3 million.
The Rosenbauer RTX Electric Fire Engine will operate out of Station 178, which is scheduled to open this spring on Town Center Drive east of Haven Avenue, according to a statement on the city’s website.
Rancho Cucamonga is only the third fire department in North America to obtain such an engine, which is nearly silent while it’s being driven and has a backup system to recharge batteries for emergencies and longer operations.
“Our top priority is the health and safety of our community and firefighters,” said Mike McCliman, Rancho Cucamonga fire chief, in the statement.
The engine will be the first “clean cab” in the department’s fleet. Firefighters’ protective gear will be stored in the outside compartments of the engine, which reduces exposure to carcinogens.
“We’re proud to incorporate the Rosenbauer RTX into our fleet, as it aligns with our commitment to minimizing the exposure of toxic air contaminants and safeguarding our firefighters from harmful chemicals.”
Ronsenbauer America makes more than 2,000 fire engines annually worldwide, including about 700 at its North American facilities in Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska, according to the company’s website.
