Residents Asked to Inspect Drains

Riverside is asking residents and businesses to keep the city’s storm drains clean during the rainy season.

The Adopt-a-Drain program provides a website, adoptadrainriverside.com, where volunteers can sign up to remove trash and report back-ups at drains in commercial and residential areas, according to a statement.

All volunteers agree to remove trash, tree limbs, palm fronds and any other debris that can keep water from entering a drain, or call 311 to report a problem or request assistance.

Anyone interested can visit the website and select an available drain. Volunteers are not allowed to enter a storm drain under any circumstances.

“City crews clear storm drains all year long, but we have really stepped up our efforts to get ready for the El Nino weather system,” Public Works Director Kris Martinez said in the statement. “The Adopt-a-Drain program is a way that people who live or work near one of more than 4,800 storm drains in Riverside can help us keep that drain clear.”
