National retail sales remained strong last week.
Sales were up 3.9 percent for the week that ended Saturday compared with the same week in 2013, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Stores Sales Index, which was released Tuesday.
Week-over-week, sales rose a modest 0.1 percent, according to the index.
Business was strong at wholesale clubs, dollar stores, electronic stores, clothing stores and discounters.
Cool weather throughout much of the country probably helped to boost clothing sales, said Michael Niemira, a research consultant with the council.
September sales are expected to be up five to six percent year-over-year, a “very strong” increase if that forecast proves to be correct, Niemira said.
Final sales figures for September are scheduled to be released Thursday.
