Riverside Seeks to Remove Fire Hazard

Riverside is trying to enlarge a fire break between the Santa Ana River and the Bubbling Wells neighborhood.

Recent fires on the river bottom threatened the neighborhood, which is next to Fairmount Park, causing the city to remove vegetation, underbrush and other potentially flammable materials from the area, according to a statement.

Crews from multiple city departments – public works, fire and parks, recreation and community services – were scheduled to start working Wednesday, removing trash, debris and other items that could catch fire.

“The Santa Ana River is a great asset for our community, but we must address the activities taking place there that are creating an undue amount of fire risk,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said in the statement. “It’s incumbent on the City to reduce that risk where we can for the safety of residents, and this effort will accomplish that.”
