San Bernardino has received a $5.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The Safe Streets and Road for All Grant will be used to put into place safety improvements at places in the city with high accident rates, according to a statement on San Bernardino’s website.
The sites slated to be worked on are:
- The intersection of Highland Avenue and Eucalyptus Drive;
- 9th Street from Waterman Avenue and Del Rosa Avenue;
- 30th Street from San Gabriel Street to Cedar Street;
- Meridian Avenue from Etiwanda Street to Rialto Avenue;
- Kendall Drive from University Parkway to H Street.
“San Bernardino is working hard not only to pave our streets, but to make them safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians,” said Mayor Helen Tran in the statement. “This grant will make a huge difference at five locations that have a history of accidents and injuries.”
Possible improvements and upgrades include traffic signals, high-visibility crosswalks, curb extensions, improved connections between sidewalks, pedestrian islands, buffered bike lanes, and curb ramps that comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, according to the statement.
Buffered bike lanes put greater-than-normal distance between that lane and the nearby travel lane and parked cars.
