San Bernardino has opened an animal shelter that will house up to 150 cats and 80 dogs.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held May 6 at the facility at 1543 W. 8th St., said Jeff Kraus, city spokesman.
The 7,125-square-foot was formerly home to a county health facility. San Bernardino is leasing the building from Casa Ramona, Inc.
The new Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center represents a significant expansion of the San Bernardino Animal Services Department. Last year, the Department took over shelter and adoption operations for five neighboring cities – Colton, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, and Rialto. This facility, along with an expansion of the main shelter on Chandler Place, will provide the capacity to accommodate the additional cities.
The shelter is scheduled to open to the public May 9. It will be open from noon to 4 p.m. seven days a week for adoptions, according to a statement.
