San Bernardino has received a $14 million grant that will help build the city’s first public electric vehicle charging stations.
The money from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration will help pay for 101 stations at parks, libraries, senior centers and other locations, according to a statement released by the city.
San Bernardino will operate the stations with EVCS in Arcadia. EVCS manages more than 300 charging facilities in the western United States, and it will contribute $3.5 million to help pay for San Bernardino’s equipment, construction, and operating costs.
“This grant propels San Bernardino toward a greener, more resilient future,” said Mayor Helen Tran in the statement. “We are not only improving access to sustainable transportation, but reaffirming our dedication to environmental progress and community growth.”
Total cost of the project, which the city council is expected to vote on in the next few months, is approximately $17.5 million, according to the statement.
