San Bernardino County is accepting online applications for county sheriff.
Sheriff John McMahon will retire next month, but his current four-year term does not end until Jan. 2, 2023, according to a statement on the county’s website.
A special election will not be held.
“The timing of this vacancy would not allow a special election to occur until June 7, 2022, which is the date of the next regular election for sheriff,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “The county should not go that long without someone serving in the office of sheriff.”
Only San Bernardino County residents are eligible to fill the position. The Board of Supervisors will conduct a special meeting on July 7 to identify finalists, conduct public interviews, and consider appointing McMahon’s replacement.
Applications are available at www.cms.sbcounty.gov. They will be accepted until 5 p.m. June 30. McMahon, who has been in public service for more than 36 years, announced his retirement on June 18.
