San Bernardino County’s homeless population grew an estimated 26 percent in 2022, in part because of higher rents and not enough affordable housing, according to county officials.
Four thousand one hundred and ninety-five people were identified as homeless during the county’s Point In Time Count, which was conducted on Jan. 26, the county reported in a statement on its website.
That was an increase of 862 from the 2022 count, which estimated the county’s 2021 homeless population to be 3,333.
Those numbers were released on April 26, during the meeting of the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership- Interagency Council on Homelessness.
The number of people living in homeless shelters rose by 275, a 29.1 percent year-over-year increase and a sign the county making progress in getting homeless people off the street.
Also, nearly 40 percent of those who were homeless in San Bernardino County last year were homeless for the first time, while 44 percent had been homeless for at least one year, according to the statement.
