The San Bernardino Police Department has received a $458,000 grant that will pay for a 12-month enforcement and public awareness program regarding traffic safety laws.
That funding, from the Office of Traffic Safety, will teach people about safe roadway habits and generally promote behavior that prevents traffic injuries and fatalities, according to a statement.
The program, which will run until Sept. 30., will include driving-under-the-influence checkpoints, youth traffic safety education programs and extra patrols in areas with excessive fatalities, DUI arrests and collisions.
The department also plans to beef-up enforcement of speeding, red light and stop sign violations and compile “hot sheets” that identify repeat DUI offenders.
Two years ago, 3,623 people were killed in traffic accidents statewide, a seven percent increase year-over-year, the National Highway Traffic Administration reported.
“Almost all crashes are preventable,”said Rhonda Craft, director of the traffic safety office, in the statement. “Education and enforcement go hand in hand [to help] change behaviors that cause devastating crashes.”
