Survey: ONT among biggest cargo handlers

Ontario International Airport has been recognized for its rise in cargo during the first five months of this year.

Ontario International was one of only two U.S. Airports that recorded double-digit growth in commercial freight during that time, according to Fitch Ratings, a global credit rating company in New York.

All other major cargo hubs were either unchanged or experienced a decline in the amount of cargo they handled compared with the first five months of 2019.

Ontario International’s 18 percent year-over-year increase happened because of COVID-19, which caused consumers and businesses to rely more on e-commerce for household goods and personal protective equipment.

“The Fitch Ratings analysis reaffirms Ontario’s role in our nation’s supply chain network, especially in recent months as the coronavirus pandemic profoundly impacted virtually all aspects of life, and we expect air cargo to remain strong for many months to come,” said Mark Thorpe, chief executive officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority, in the statement.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport was the other U.S. airport to register a double-digit increase in cargo, according to the statement.
