Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590 with host Ed Hoffman as he discusses national current events and politics, with a few mortgage tips along the way. Ed delivers intelligent, entertaining radio that makes hard news easy to understand!
This week, everyone’s talking about the Syrian refugee crisis because of the Republican-led opposition to the United States accepting refugees in light of recent developments. We now know that at least one of the attackers in Paris last week had a fake Syrian passport, which could mean he snuck back into Europe by posing as a Syrian refugee. Furthermore, five Syrians carrying forged Greek passports were detained in Honduras this week; Ed has the scoop, including information on where they were headed. Here’s a hint: We live there!
Despite all this, the President says he thinks his strategy on ISIS does not need to be changed – and of course, he’s unleashing on Republicans who want a ban on Syrian refugees. In response to this and Obama saying he doesn’t want to do anything to “make America look tough,” Ed says, “Oh don’t worry Mr. President, nobody thinks America looks tough anymore.” Ed plays audio of the Republican presidential candidates responding; tune in to hear what Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, Chris Christie and Donald Trump have to say on the President’s mishandling of ISIS and haphazard policy on Syrian refugees.
You’ll also hear Speaker Paul Ryan’s comment that he is “baffled” by Obama’s statement that he will veto the new bill introduced to restrict the ability of refugees to resettle here – and, you’ll hear Ed comment that Ryan can “change the way Republicans think” (including those who felt Ryan’s running mate Mitt Romney “wasn’t conservative enough” for them in 2012).
In the second half, Ed welcomes constitutional expert Douglas Gibbs. Ed and Doug start it off by discussing President Obama’s affinity for executive orders – specifically, his controversial executive order on immigration earlier this year. Doug quotes the Constitution’s declaration, “All legislative powers shall be vested in the Congress. “All means all,” Doug says. “Anytime he acts without Congress, he doesn’t have legislative authority.” That means, Doug says, that the 28 states suing the federal government over Obamacare were well within their constitutional rights to do so.
Next, they talk about the constitutionality of Ted Cruz running for President; as listeners know, Ed likes Cruz but believes he is not eligible to run for President because he was born in Canada. If you have wondered about this yourself, tune into The Main Event this week! Here’s a teaser: Doug defines what “natural born citizen” means, and explains that the definition is not what most people think it is. He even cites two historical cases that set precedent for it, and points out that based on the true definition of “natural born citizen,” two other candidates should not be eligible either – wow! If you are one of the listeners who takes issue with Ed over his opinion on Ted Cruz’s eligibility, tune in to the show this week! It’s an eye-opener.
