UC Riverside has received a record number of applications for its fall 2021 semester.
52,263 applications were received for the upcoming freshman class, about 3,000 more than were received one year ago for the fall 2020 semester, the previous record, according to a statement on the university’s website.
“The applications speak to the determination of our pool of students to earn a degree, despite the hardships presented by the pandemic,” said Thomas M. Smith, UC Riverside’s interim provost and executive vice chancellor, in the statement. “An expected return to in-person instruction will encourage strong enrollment numbers for the fall, as well.”
On Jan. 11, University of California President Michael V. Drake announced the UC system plans to return to in-person instruction this fall.
Eighty-six percent of UC Riverside’s freshman applicants for next fall are California residents, second only to UC Merced for in-state applicants, according to the statement.
