Ballot measure to get oversight panel

Upland sets guidelines, oversight committee for proposed sales tax

Upland is preparing for the possible passage of Measure N, the proposed one-cent sales tax on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Earlier this month, the city council established that revenue generated by Measure N will be spent primarily on infrastructure and safety, according to a statement on the city’s website.

The council also voted to set up a citizens oversight committee – if Measure N passes – that will “ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency “ in the use of the revenue it generates.

Both proposals passed unanimously.

“If Measure N passes, I will appoint an Upland resident to the oversight committee who is not afraid to question the city and will hold leaders’ feet to the fire,” said Councilman James Breitling, who played a major roll in getting the proposed tax on the ballot.

“I believe I speak for the entire council when I say I want Upland streets fixed and our community safe.”
