Corona, in partnership with Christian Arts and Theatre, will commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a tribute concert at the Corona Civic Center.
“Hope after Grief” will use photographs of the death and destruction of that tragic day combined with a variety of music, with Act 1 focusing on grief and Act 2 transitioning into hope, according to a statement released Thursday.
In between musical numbers, narrations will be provided by several community leaders, including Fire Chief David Duffy, Council members Dick Haley and Karen Spiegel and local actress Vicky Irvine.
Also, the civic center lobby will be transformed into a miniature museum exhibit and will include a beam from one of the World Trade Center towers.
Corona officials decided to hold the concert because the city has never commemorated 9/11 and its victims with a formal event, said David Montgomery-Scott, director of Corona’s Library & Recreation Services Department.
Depending on the response, the 9/11 concert could become a regular event.
“We don’t want to overuse it, but that’s something we’re going to look at,” said Montgomery-Scott, who said planing for the concert began about three months ago. “Every five years could be a possibility.”
“Hope after Grief” will be performed at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 10 and at 2 p.m. Sept. 11. Tickets are $10, with proceeds to be divided between the Corona Police Community Partnership and Corona Fire Safety Foundation, both non-profits.
The Corona Civic Center is a 815 W. 6th St. For more information call recreation services at (951) 736-2241.
