State’s economy stalls

California’s economy slowed a little in May, as employers added only 5,500 jobs, according to data.

Still, unemployment held at 4.2 percent, a record low, the state’s Employment Development Department reported.

That marked a considerable downturn, when 25,600 jobs were added statewide. That number was revised down from the original April report.

Leisure and hospitality (7,900) and professional and business services (2,500) both added jobs, while construction and trade, transportation and utilities shed 2,900 and 1,800 jobs.

Riverside and San Bernardino posted jobless rates of 3.8 percent and 3.6 percent in May, according to the EDD.
