EMWD gets federal grant

Eastern Municipal Water District has received a $210,000 grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, money the district will use to help its agricultural customers use water more efficiently.

The grant is part of the Agricultural Water Conservation and Efficiency Program, a joint effort between the bureau and the National Resources Conservation Service, according to a statement.

Eastern Municipal, which serves an estimated 816,000 people in western Riverside County, is one of three agencies to receive funds from the program. The grant will be used to upgrade water infrastructure, provide online tracking of water use in real time and create weather-based water budgets for local farmers.

The conservation service is an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture that provides technical assistance to farmers.

There are more than 10,000 acres of farmland in Eastern Municipal’s service area, most of which is irrigated with recycled water, according to the statement.
