The state legislature today overwhelmingly passed a $687 million drought-relief plan.
The plan, which will now go to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk, redirects money in the state budget and also draws funds from two previously approved bonds, according to a report originally published by Associated Press.
Nearly $475 million in emergency funding will be spent on water conservation and recycling projects, while $47 million will be used on food and housing assistance for people in communities hurt badly by the drought, according to the report.
Another $15 million will go to communities running low on drinking water. The plan also stiffens penalties for diverting water, according to the report.
The legislation – actually two Senate bills – will take effect immediately if Gov. Brown signs it, which he is expected to do, according to the report.
