Demolition of SB auto dealerships set to begin

The demolition of two former automobile dealerships at the San Bernardino Auto Center will begin Feb. 11.

A small celebration is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., when wrecking balls will be applied to the former Scion building at 650 Auto Center Drive and the one-time Cadillac facility at 1406 Camino Real, according to a statement.

“This is the beginning of the end for some well-used buildings,” said Cliff Cummings, owner of both properties as well as owner and chief executive officer of Toyota of San Bernardino, the auto center’s signature dealership. “More importantly, it signifies the beginning of our next phase of development.”

Last summer, Cummings announced that he planned to remove some buildings and rearrange his properties at the auto center, which is located immediately north of the Interstate 10-Interstate 215 interchange.

Ultimately, Cummings wants to build a state-of-the-art Toyota dealership on the former Scion site, convert the former Cadillac site into Toyota’s service bay and parts department. He also wants to take down the current Toyota building and replace it with a Subaru dealership, and install a service road.

Finally, the Subaru dealership at 645 Auto Center Drive S will be torn down and replaced with a luxury automobile dealership, although that project is still being planned and no dealership has agreed to locate there, according to Cummings.
