Riverside names interim police chief

Larry Gonzalez will serve as Riverside’s interim chief of police when Chief Sergio Diaz retires Sept. 15.

“Chief Diaz has demonstrated tremendous leadership of the Riverside Police Department during the past nine years,” City Manager Al Zelinka said. “Larry Gonzalez is the right person to continue that strong leadership while we take the time on the selection process for this very important position.”

Gonzalez is currently the department’s deputy chief of administration. A 26-year Riverside Police Department veteran, Gonzalez has held his current position – one of two deputy chiefs directly under Chief Diaz – since June 2017.

Diaz spent 33 years with the Los Angeles Police Department before becoming Riverside’s  police chief July 2010, according to the statement.
