Apple Valley begins overhaul of busy intersection

Apple Valley has started reconstruction at Apple Valley Road and Highway 18, one of the town’s busiest intersections.

The project, expected to be completed in late 2021, will widen the roads in all four directions, realign Apple Valley Road, reduce the north slope approaching the intersection and improve drainage, according to a statement on the town’s website.

Traffic signals will also be replaced, and sidewalks in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act will be installed.

Apple Valley, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority, and Caltrans will pay for the $9.6 million project.

The improvements have been “a long time coming,” according to Mayor Scott Nassif.

“The goal is to move more cars in less time,” Nassif said in the statement. “This is one of the town’s busiest intersections, and the first intersection travelers come across on Highway 18 after entering town through the area known as ‘The Narrows.’”
