Proposed park sale defeated

A ballot measure that would have sold part of a public park to accommodate a hospital expansion has been narrowly defeated.

Upland’s Measure Q received 12,435 No votes and 12,132 votes in favor, with all 48 precincts reporting, according to the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters.

Measure Q would have allowed the sale of 4.6 acres of Upland Memorial Park to San Antonio Regional Hospital.

The property at 1299 San Bernardino Road is across the street from the hospital. A baseball field, concessions and a parking lot are located on the site.

The land would have been used for a three or four-story medical office building that would have included a cardiovascular unit and a center for aging.

Opponents of the measure called it a land-grab and maintained the city was trying to sell the land to make a profit.
