UC Riverside is participating in a COVID-19 exposure notification system.
The program worked well when it was tested on two University of California campuses early this fall and is being expanded to five more UC campuses, including UC Riverside, according to a statement on the school’s website.
The effort uses Google/Apple Exposure Notification, technology on smartphones to help contact tracers and reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
A major goal of the program – a joint effort between Sacramento and the UC system – is to determine if smartphone technology can get people to respond to a high-risk exposure more quickly.
“Helping slow the spread of the virus is a crucial step in keeping our communities safe,” said Andres Gonzalez, a chief medical officer with UCR Health, in the statement. . “Using technology to slow COVID-19 is an innovative and powerful way to fight this pandemic.”
