High Desert road widening is underway

Work has begun on the reconstruction and widening of Stoddard Wells Road in Apple Valley.

As of Oct. 1, Stoddard Wells Road is closed from Interstate 15 to Johnson Road and will remain through late November, according to a statement on the town’s website.

The road, now 22 feet wide, will be widened to 26 feet to accommodate trucks and other vehicles. Heavier asphalt and 13-foot wide reinforced shoulders will be put in place.

Detours will be set up, and Dale Evans Parkway will remain open during construction. “North Apple Valley has seen a significant increase in traffic due to the development of the Walmart and Big Lots distribution centers,” said Orlando Acevedo, director of business development and communications, in the statement. “The reconstructed roadway will help meet the time-sensitive logistics needs of our current industry partners and their employees, as well as future projects.”

The project is being funded partly by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority, which is paying for 45 percent of the project’s $1.6 million costs.  A combination of traffic impact fees and local Measure I funds will cover the rest of the cost, according to the statement.
