Amazon employees walk off the job

One hundred sixty Amazon employees at San Bernardino International Airport walked off the job Monday in a protest over wages and working conditions.

The workers at Amazon’s largest west coast freight hub are asking a for a base-pay increase from $17 to $22 an hour, along with upgraded health and safety standards, according to multiple reports.

“Amazon promised the Inland Empire quality jobs,” Inland Empire Amazon Workers United said in a Facebook post. “They failed to deliver. Amazon has forced us to work in extreme heat, barely paid us enough to afford rent, and now we are being retaliated against for speaking up.”

Amazon is one of the largest private sector employers in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, with multiple operations in both counties. More than 200,000 people work in Inland Empire warehouses, one of the region’s primary economic drivers, and 20 percent of those work in Amazon facilities, according to the Facebook statement.

An Amazon spokesman was quoted as saying that full-time employees can earn up to $19.25 hourly along with health care benefits and a 401(k) with a 50 percent company match.
