California officials are officially cracking down on excessive water users.
The State Water Resources Control Board on Tuesday adopted mandatory restrictions on watering lawns that would include fines of up to $500 for each violation, according to published reports.
Residences, businesses and public agencies must abide by the restrictions, which are aimed mostly at outdoor uses.
California is experiencing its worst drought in years, and Gov. Brown’s request for voluntary cutbacks in water use failed to produce satisfactory results. The new restrictions would take effect Aug. 1 and remain in place for nine months, according to the reports.
Also on Tuesday, a report was released that said the drought is expected to put a $2.2 billion dent in California’s economy and cost the state more than 17,100 jobs.
