Cardenas Markets to give out scholarships

Cardenas Markets Foundation is providing $192,000 in scholarships to students who live in areas in which the supermarket chain operates.

Sixty-four scholarships of $3,000 each will be given out this year, a $15,000 increase in total funding from 2022, according to a statement.

Academic performance, financial need, leadership qualities, and commitment to community service will determine who receives the grants.

“We understand that education is the key to achieving the American dream, and we are committed to ensuring that higher education is attainable and within financial reach for local students,” said Adam Salgado, president of the non-profit foundation, in the statement.

Based in Ontario, Cardenas Markets is one of the largest Hispanic grocery chains in the United States, with 64 locations – 57 Cardenas Markets and seven Los Altos Ranch Markets – throughout California, Nevada and Arizona, according to the statement.
