San Manuel tribe donates $1 million

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has donated $1 million to 10 nonprofit organizations that support underserved communities and Native American causes.

The donations – $100,000 to each entity – were presented last month in honor of Native American Heritage Month, according to a statement released by the tribe.

Grant recipients are:

  • Norton Science and Language AcademyNative Forward Scholars Fund
  • Stronghearts Native Helpline
  • Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museums
  • Confederated Tribe and Band of Yakama Nation
  • Cherish Ministry
  • Center for Native American Youth at Aspen Institute
  • Chinle Planting Hope
  • Spotlight Documentaries
  • Native Forward Scholars Fund
  • The Garcia Center for the Arts in San Bernardino

The grants were presented Nov. 28  – Giving Tuesday – a worldwide movement that started in 2012. It encourages people to donate to their preferred charity.

Less than one percent of all charitable funds raised in the United States go to organizations that support Native Americans, according to the statement.
