Ontario International Airport has received $500,000 in federal funds to help pay for road reconstruction south of the airfield.
The improvements along a one-mile stretch of East Avion and East Jurupa streets will improve freight access at Ontario International and reduce congestion and vehicle emissions, according to a statement on the airport’s website.
Upgrades will include new pavement, an additional lane in each direction, intersection signals, striping, signs, utility infrastructure and improved grading and drainage. The extra lanes will allow freight-hauling trucks to pass each other and make safer turns.
Rep. Norma Torres, D-Ontario, who helped secure the funding, presented a symbolic check to airport officials May 29. The Avion Street Realignment will happen in three phases, with the first phase expected to cost $11.5 million.
A construction timeline has not been announced.
“Air cargo creates jobs and economic opportunity across our region and around the world,” said Atif Elkadi, chief executive officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority, in the statement. “These improvements will help ensure Ontario International’s role as an economic driver and a job creator.”
