ONT completes runway upgrades

Ontario International Airport has completed a $90 million renovation of one of its two runways.

The project, which began in February 2023, included repaving 80,000 square yards of the airport’s southernmost runway, according to a statement on the airport’s website.

Some concrete was removed, and a taxiway next to the runway was constructed while two taxiways were removed. LED lights were installed, and some other infrastructure improvements were made.

Nearly $67 million of the $90 million price tag came from grants from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program. The rest was paid by the Ontario International Airport Authority.

Ontario International has posted 42 consecutive months of year-over-year passenger growth, and it is on track to draw more than seven million passengers in 2024. That would be a, 75 percent increase since it was returned to local ownership in 2016, according to the statement.
