Moreno Valley voters will decide next month whether to elect the city’s mayor or keep the current practice of letting the city council choose the mayor from one of its five members.
The city’s Nov. 4 ballot includes three measures related to the potential change: one of those, Measure R, would make the mayor an elected position and reduce the number of council districts from five to four, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
If passed, those changes would go into effect in time for the Nov. 2016 election.
Measures S and T will ask voters if the mayor’s term should be two years or four years; whichever gets the highest number of votes would settle the issue, according to the report.
A fourth initiative, Measure I, would make term limits mandatory for council members.
The measures were first proposed by former Mayor Tom Owings, who was recalled in June. Mayor Jesse Molina, Owings’ successor, has played a major role in promoting the proposals, the report stated.
