Council to consider lakeshore development

The Lake Elsinore City Council is scheduled to decide whether to allow residential development along the northeast shore of Lake Elsinore.

If the council makes the necessary zoning changes, houses could then be built along that stretch of land for the first time in 35 years, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

Nearly 200 lots, and a few private beaches, line the 1.3 mile strip of shoreline between Elm Grove Beach Park and the northwest corner of the lake. The zone is within the Lake Edge District, which surrounds the northwest end of the lake, the report stated.

No development has been allowed there since a major flood destroyed homes there. After that happened, the Army Corps of Engineers reconfigured the lake to control its water, including the construction of a levee.

If the zoning changes are approved, the property owners will be allowed to build along the lakeshore if they can overcome some major restrictions and obstacles established by the city, according to the report.
