Nine employees of the Pomona Unified School District who work in child development will no longer be district employees by the end of June.
All of the employees – eight child care assistants and a medical technician – lack the certification needed for the jobs they now hold and will be let go, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
Board members learned of the issue after the district received a $1.3 million grant that requires the district to work closely with the state of California and its Head Start program, the report stated.
The grant mandates that all assistants working in the program must have completed some course work in child development, which none of the eight Pomona Unified assistants have done.
Pomona Unified board members voted this week to proceed with the layoffs.
Officials with the California School Employees Association defended their members, saying they faced genuine obstacles that prevented them from completing the required course work.
Those obstacles included family obligations or not having enough money to pay for the classes, according to the report.
