Drought-relief funding is untapped

More than $340 million earmarked for California communities hit especially hard by the drought has not been spent.

One year ago, lawmakers voted to use the money for drought relief, protect wells from contamination and upgrade old water system, according to an Associated Press report.

While much funding has gone toward drought relief, the fact that such a large sum has yet to be used shows how difficult it can be to get the bureaucracy to respond quickly, even in a crisis.

About half of the $687 million set aside by the Brown Administration to help farm workers and other sectors struggling with the drought has not been spent, the report stated.
