Ontario Airport traffic stays up

Maybe Ontario International Airport’s slogan should be “Viva Mexico!”

Passenger traffic at the airport was up 1.5 percent in June, but the real increase happened on the international side of the ledger, according to data release Tuesday by Los Angeles World Airports.

International traffic increased 73 percent compared with June 2014, the largest year-over-year increase in that category in the airport’s history, said LAWA, the agency that owns Ontario International and Los Angeles International airports.

AeroMexico and Volaris, the airport’s two international carriers, served 13,327 passengers during June.

Overall, the airport served 367,236 travelers last month, up from 361,742 in June 2014, according to LAWA.

The international numbers were impressive, but by themselves they don’t explain why passenger traffic is up at Ontario International, said Maria Tesoro, airport spokeswoman.

“The economy is doing better and people are traveling more,” said Tesoro, who noted that passenger traffic at Ontario International has increased every month for the past year or so, albeit in small numbers. “I think that’s had as much to do with it as anything.”

Ontario International is a full-service airport that serves 15 major U.S. cities. It has eight major carriers, and about 62 flights depart from there every day, LAWA stated.
