The Moreno Valley Animal Shelter has received a $25,000 grant from the Petco Foundation, money the shelter plans to use to spay and neuter cats throughout the city.
The shelter’s feral cat pilot project – known as TNR, or Trap, Neuter, Release – began last October and had treated 259 felines by the end of May, according to a statement posted on the city’s website.
That program, originally paid for with a $2,500 grant from comedienne Elayne Boosler, was kept going with donations from other shelter supporters. The Petco grant money is expected to pay for the spaying or neutering of more than 800 feral cats.
The grant was accepted by the Moreno Valley City Council at its June 7th meeting. Ultimately, shelter officials hope to reduce the number of cats that are euthanized at the shelter.
