Bill Backs OIA Ownership Change

The House of Representatives has approved a bill that will help bring about the transfer of ownership of Ontario International Airport.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, was approved Tuesday by voice vote, according to a statement on Calvert’s website.

“Today is a great day for the Inland Empire and the future of air travel for our region,” said Calvert said in the statement. “Restoring local control of Ontario Airport and improving air travel options for Inland Empire residents and businesses is one of my highest priorities. I look forward to the bill being passed by the Senate in the very near future.

The airport is owned by Los Angeles World Airports, an agency of the city of Los Angeles. LAWA and the Ontario International Airport Authority have worked out an agreement that will shift ownership to the authority, but it has yet to be approved by all parties.

That agreement was announced last August.

Calvert’s bill does not authorize any federal spending to help bring about the transfer. Companion legislation has been introduced in the Senate, according to the statement.
