City starts local hiring program

Moreno Valley businesses now have an incentive to hire locally.

The city’s Hire A Mo Valley Grad program awards $1,000 to any business that hires a local resident who recently graduated from college or who earned certification from an accredited local school, according to a statement on the city’s website.

The $50,000 pilot program, which is scheduled to start July 1 and last exactly one year, is expected to create roughly 100 full-time jobs for Moreno Valley residents.

“This program will help put our educated and talented youth to work right here in City of Moreno Valley for jobs elsewhere,” Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said in the statement. “A small investment in our youth today will translate into rich dividends for our workforce and our future.”

Each business is limited to five hires.

To be eligible, Moreno Valley businesses must be licensed by the city.

Anyone hired must have received a degree from an accredited Riverside County college or university, completed a vocational educational training program or finished a comprehensive Career Technical Education course -three courses minimum – through the Riverside County Office of Education.

Those courses must have been completed within the past two years.

Also, all hires must work for the business for at least six months and put it at least 35 hours per week, according to the statement.
