Ontario International Airport is preparing for an increase in holiday passenger traffic.
An estimated 432,000 passengers are expected to use the airport during the Thanksgiving and Christmas travel periods, an increase of 6.2 percent compared with last year, according to a statement.
Passenger levels at Thanksgiving – Nov. 18 through Nov. 28 – are expected to reach 151,100 travelers, a year-over-year increase of nearly eight percent.
Christmas and New Year’s travel – Dec. 15 to Jan., 4 – will reach approximately 281,313 passengers, an increase of 5.4 percent compared with last year.
The arrival of Frontier Airlines in October is the primary reason airport officials expect a substantial increase in holiday traffic this year, along with Southwest Airlines adding a new domestic route, more international service by Volaris and larger aircraft being used by Delta, Alaska and United Airlines, according to the statement.
This will be the second holiday travel season since Ontario International shifted to local control and away from its previous owner, Los Angeles World Airports. That agency, better known as LAWA, owns Los International Airport.
