Crime down in Riverside County

Violent crime in the parts of Riverside County patrolled by the county sheriff’s department dropped 8.8 percent in 2017.

Property crimes also fell in those areas, which include both cities and unincorporated sectors, by 1.6 percent last year, according to data released Monday by the department.

With the exception of larceny-theft, which rose 0.4 percent, all crime categories declined in the sheriff’s territories last year. Homicides dropped 31.7 percent, while rapes fell 3.3 percent and robberies decreased 5.5 percent.

Also, aggravated assaults saw a 10.3 percent year-over-year drop, while burglaries fell 1.6 percent and vehicle thefts dropped 8.7 percent.

The sheriff’s department serves a population of nearly 1 million in 17 cities and another 400,000 in unincorporated areas.

The report is based on FBI data.
