Aldi likes the Inland Empire

Aldi, the discount grocery store chain, will open its first eight Southern California stores – all in the Inland Empire – on March 24.

The Batavia, Ill.-based chain will open stores in Beaumont, Fontana, La Quinta, Lake Elsinore, Moreno Valley, Palm Springs, San Bernardino and Yucaipa, according to a statement.

By the end of this year, Aldi plans to have opened 45 stores and employ more than 1,100 people in Southern California.

Each store will host a three-day grand opening event that will start March 24. The first 100 shoppers will receive a golden ticket they can exchange for an ALDI gift certificate, and all shoppers will be asked to participate in a sweepstakes to win free produce for one year.

“There is a strong appetite among Southern Californians for an alternative place to shop, and we are eager to show them the significant benefits that can come from shopping at ALDI, both for their wallets and lifestyles,” Gordon Nesbit, Aldi’s Moreno Valley division vice president, said in the statement.
