Riverside County has helped obtain a $600,000 settlement in connection with a consumer protection lawsuit filed against Allstate Insurance Co.
The settlement stems from a civil complaint that alleged Allstate’s television advertising did not state that the company’s “accident forgiveness” program isn’t available in California, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Riverside County’s District Attorney’s office.
The complaint was filed in Riverside County Superior Court. Los Angeles and San Diego counties joined in that filling, and the settlement will be divided among those three entities, according to the statement.
Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia approved the settlement Wednesday.
California’s Department of Insurance prohibits any accident forgiveness programs. State law also requires that “all advertising must clearly and conspicuously disclose any material facts that viewers need to avoid being misled,” according to the statement.
Allstate, which admitted no liability in the settlement, estimated that its 2012 advertising campaign reached approximately 90 percent of the households in California, according to the statement.
