Apple Valley Municipal Animal Shelter has opened its doors to more than 400 displaced animals as a result of the devastating Blue Cut Fire.
As of Friday, the shelter had taken in 302 dogs, 111 cats and 25 other animals, including lizards and guinea pigs, said Gina Whiteside, the shelter’s director of animal services, in a statement.
People from Orange County and beyond answered the shelter’s pleas for food, bowls, cat litter and cleaning supplies, among other items, according to the statement.
Staff and volunteers worked around-the-clock building emergency holding pens on the staff parking lot and along the shelter’s interior courtyard. Now, volunteers are working in shifts to feed and water all of the animals, clean surfaces, walk dogs and change litter boxes.
Adult volunteers will be needed for at least one more week. Anyone interested in helping should call (760) 240-7000 x7555.
