Apple Valley renews sheriff department contract

Apple Valley has renewed its law-enforcement contract with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The $15.5 million agreement, which the town council approved recently, runs from July 1 of this year through June 30, 2021, according to a statement on the town’s website.

The contract represents a 10.3 percent increase from the town’s current contract of $14 million. The increase was needed to cover higher costs for salaries, pensions, and benefits of public safety employees.

Deputies will not be paid more under the new agreement, according to the statement.

The sheriff’s department recently released its 2019 annual report, which showed a nine percent drop in crimes reported in Apple Valley between 2018 and 2019 and a 37 percent decrease from 2015 to 2019.

The drop in reported crimes includes rape, robbery, aggravated assault and burglary.

Apple Valley’s overall crime rate has declined for five consecutive years, according to the statement.
