The South Coast Air Quality Management Tuesday gave one dozen new, battery-operated lawnmowers to San Bernardino County.
The delivery at the Inland Empire 66ers stadium in San Bernardino is part of a long-term demonstration program designed to promote the devices, which produce zero emissions, according to the district.
“We hope the ease of use and significant fuel costs savings associated with these mowers will encourage more widespread use of this cleaner technology,” San Bernardino County Supervisor Janice Rutherford said in the statement.
Rutherford is also a district board member.
Seven government and non-profit agencies, including Cal State San Bernardino, the city of San Bernardino and San Bernardino County received the lawn mowers. An additional five mowers are scheduled to be awarded next week, according to the statement.
Each agency will provide hours of usage, fuel savings estimates and other information to the district, which will then quantify air quality benefits.
The mowers, which are manufactured in Ohio, include riding and walk-behind models. Replacing one commercial gasoline-powered mower with a battery-operated mower will in one year save 700 gallons of gasoline per year and cut smog-forming emissions and fine particulates by 600 pounds, the district stated.
