Arts Academy gets Financial Boost

The Riverside Arts Academy, which provides art, music and dance lessons to Riverside youth at little or no cost, has received a major donation.

A Nov. 30 fundraiser at the Cesar Chavez Community Center raised $98,000 for the academy, according to a statement released by the city Monday.

The event raised money through ticket sales and a silent auction of custom-made furniture produced by Art ’N Kids, a local organization that donated $60,000 to the academy. That organization and Sid Salazar, superintendent of the Alvord Unified School District, were both honored for their support of the academy.

Alpin Hong, a renowned classical pianist who is scheduled to perform next month with the Riverside County Philharmonic, appeared at the fundraiser.

“The ‘Art of Giving Gala’ really captured the community spirit that has helped start, sustain and grow the Riverside Arts Academy,” Councilman Andy Melendrez said in a statement. “The money raised from this event will benefit young people from all around our city.”

The academy is a collaborative effort between community volunteers and the Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
