Ballot measure to get oversight panel

Apple Valley will set up a committee to oversee Measure P, a one-cent sales tax that will appear on the town’s ballot Nov. 5.

If it passes, the panel of local residents will ensure “transparency and accountability” in the collection and spending of revenue generated by Measure P, according to a statement on the town’s website.

The size of the panel was not disclosed.

The initiative is formally known as the Citizen’s Transactions and Use (Sales) Tax Revenue Measure.

“We are committed to being transparent and accountable to our residents,” Mayor Scott Nassif said in the statement. “The establishment of this oversight committee reflects our dedication to responsible governance and our desire to ensure that any additional revenue from this measure is used effectively and for the benefit of our community.”

If approved by voters, Measure P is expected to generate about $9 million annually to help pay for town services, including law enforcement, street repair and reducing homelessness, according to the statement.
