Students at Cal Poly Pomona are fast at work on the school’s entry in Pasadena’s 2017 Rose Parade.
The school’s float, “A New Leaf,”depicts several chameleons investigating and adapting to their habitat, which includes large dragonflies, butterflies, hibiscus flowers and a waterfall, according to a statement.
Work on the float began last summer at Cal Poly’s Pomona and San Luis Obispo’s campuses. In late October, the half of the float assembled in San Luis Obispo was driven to Pomona, where the two pieces were connected.
Students of all majors and backgrounds build the float, which includes welding, metal shaping, foam carving, painting and flower harvesting. The work will speed between Christmas and New Year’s Day, with hundreds of volunteers putting the finishing touches on the project.
This will be Cal Poly’s 69th Rose Parade entry. It is the only student-built float in the parade.
This year’s parade theme is “Echoes of Success.” The 128th annual Tournament of Roses Parade is scheduled to be held Jan. 2.
