Riverside is seeking applicants for its new Budget Engagement Commission.
The 18-member panel will advise the city council on spending and other policy matters based on information it receives from quarterly financial and performance reports, said Phil Pitchford, city spokesman.
The group, which will meet four times a year, was formed in part because of Measure Z, the one percent sales tax increase that Riverside voters approved Nov. 8.
Measure Z is expected to generate $48 to $50 million a year for basic services, including more police and fire personnel as well as more tree trimming and road repairs. With that much extra revenue coming in annually, the council believes it could use more public input regarding how that money is spent, Pitchford said.
About 10 people have applied so far. Each of the seven council members will nominate one resident and one business member from each council ward. The mayor will nominate two residents and two business members citywide.
All nominees must be registered to vote, and final appointments must be approved by the mayor and city council, according to the statement.
Anyone interested must apply by Dec. 1. Applications are available by contacting the city clerk’s office at (951) 826-5557 or by visiting [email protected].
