City to Distribute Federal Block Grants

Moreno Valley is accepting applications for Community Development Block Grant Funds.

The city has received a little more than $2 million in block grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the fiscal year that starts July 1, said Amy Nesmith, a management aide with the city.

About 10 percent of those funds will go to improve housing in rundown or otherwise underprivileged neighborhoods. The rest will go to various capital improvement projects in the city, Nesmith said.

Moreno Valley will accept applications through Feb. 19. Recipients typically get about $30,000 to pay for their projects, but that figure can go higher at the discretion of the city council, which distributes the funds, Nesmith said.

“We’ve been getting block grant funds from the federal government for years,” Nesmith said of the program, which began in 1974 and provides funding to approximately 1,200 local governments every year. “It’s a very important program for the city.”
